The issue of icon visibility seems to come up a lot, what with aging eyes and all. Unfortunately, the game's map icon file is only 25 pixels wide, so you can't make the icons themselves much larger. So, I've been tinkering with trying to enhance their visibility (a little bit) by placing them on colored tiles of the appropriate national color. These graphics don't always make it directly obvious as to what sort of TF it is, but at least you know for sure that there is one there. The only issue is that sometimes the tiles can partly cover the exclamation points icons that let you know if the supply situation at a base is critical. I also tried to beef up the dot base icon, as that graphic was always tough to see.

When you unzip the folder, place the twelve mapicon bitmap (.BMP) files located inside into the ART folder of the WITP/AE directory. They'll replace the current bitmap files, so back those up if you want to keep them around. I didn't make up any of the spare mapicon files, just the ones for the eleven nations represented in the game. So, if you had your heart set on purple or teal colors representing your favorite country, you're on your own.

There are two files for Japan. One has the default rising sun flag, the alternate has the more low-key red disc on a white background flag. It's labeled mapiconsJ_altJ. Rename it to mapicons_J if you wish to use it.
