By_1862_most_of_the_regiment_had_converted_to_Sharps_rifles_with_telescopic_sights._The_regiment_proved_their_worth_at_Ft._Donnellson_when_they_silenced_a_rebel_battery_during_the_siege. By_1864,_the_men_of_regiment_were_veterans_and_had_concluded_that_the_volume_of_fire_was_even_more_critical_than_long_range_shooting._The_men_purchased_15_shot_Henry_repeaters_at_their_own_cost._And_the_awful_looking_squirrel_tail_hats_were_gone_along_with_any_equipment_that_would_burden_them_on_the_march. By_wars_end_they_had_participated_in_16_major_battles,_untold_skirmishes,_marched_5000_miles_and_sustained_38%_casualties.

120	Gibraltar_Brigade	1	24	0	1	0	0	0	0	0	0	0	0	65	The_Fourteenth_Regiment_was_originally_organized_at_Camp_Vigo,_near_Terre_Haute,_in_May,_1861,_as_one_of_the_six_regiments_of_State_troops_accepted_for_one_year._Upon_the_call_for_three_years'_troops,_the_regiment_volunteered,_almost_unanimously,_for_that_service._The_new_organization_was_mustered_into_United_States'_service_at_Terre_Haute,_on_the_7th_of_June,_l86l,_being_the_first_three_years'_regiment_mustered_in_from_Indiana._It_participated_in_the_great_battle_of_Antietam_on_the_17th,_serving_in_Kimball's_brigade_of_French's_division,_it_being_the_only_portion_of_the_line_of_battle_that_did_not,_at_some_time_during_the_engagement_give_way._For_its_behavior_on_this_occasion_Gen._French_gave_the_Brigade_the_title_of_the_Gibraltar_Brigade_-_it_having_maintained_its_position,_repelling_the_terrible_onslaught_of_the_enemy,_filling_the_ditch_in_front_with_killed_and_wounded,_and,_finally_advancing_and_driving_the_enemy_from_the_field,_taking_many_prisoners._The_Fourteenth_was_engaged_for_four_hours_within_sixty_yards_of_the_enemy's_line,_and_after_exhausting_sixty_rounds_of_cartridges_the_men_supplied_themselves_with_others_from_the_boxes_of_their_dead_and_wounded_companions._It_went_into_the_fight_with_320_men_and_lost_31_killed_and_150_wounded,_including_three_officers_killed_and_seven_wounded.
