OVERVIEW:  The RBS-70 platoon is a short-range, air defense unit using the RB-70 Mk 1 laser beam riding missile.

DETAILS: The RB 70 missile uses a laser beam detector mounted at the back of the missile which detects the laser guidance beam. 

The RBS-70 unit can operate independently or act as part of an anti-aircraft battery linked with the Giraffe land mobile surveillance radar.

NOTES:  IOC 1982.  Because of the requirement to keep the laser beam on target, troops employing the RBS 70 require considerably more training than required to operate most infrared-guided SAMs.
