OVERVIEW:  The Pantsir-S1E aka SA-22 GREYHOUND Platoon is a mobile, very low-to-high altitude, short range air defense unit.

DETAILS: The Pantsir-S1 aka SA-22 GREYHOUND is intended to provide point air defense of military, industrial and administrative installations against aircraft, helicopters, precision munitions, cruise missiles and UAVs, especially at low to extremely low altitudes.  It is also used to provide protection for air defense units such as the S-300/400 and air defense for motorized or mechanized troops. 

The Pantsir uses a combined gun/missile armament.  This dual system creates a relatively wide continuous target engagement zone.  The gun portion of the system uses two dual 30 mm autocannon with an ROF of 2,500 rounds/minute per gun. 

The Pantsir's SAM armament consists of  twelve SA-22 (57E6) command-guided missiles in sealed ready-to-launch container tubes.  Target and missile tracking is provided via the system's multiband sensor system and guidance data is submitted via radio link to guide up to four missiles in flight. The system is capable of tracking up to 20 separate targets and engaging up to 3 targets simultaneously using the radar.  A fourth missile can be simultaneously controlled using the electro-optical system.  Typically, two missile salvos are fired at each target. The Pantsir-S1 can fire missiles on the move. 

The Pantsir-S1 fire control system includes a VNIIRT 2RL80 target acquisition radar operating in the E/F band and dual waveband 1RS2-E PESA target and missile tracking radar, operating in the K band. The FC system also has an electro-optic channel with long-wave thermal imager and infrared direction finder, including digital signal processing and automatic target tracking. Maximum engagement rate is 10-12 targets/minute.

The Pantsir can operate in fully automatic mode.  It also has a passive engagement capability, using optical tracking.  Each Pantsir can operate autonomously, or can operate as part of a battery, with one Pantsir acting as a CP and designating targets for up to 5 Pantsir systems.  The battery can also be linked to stand alone early warning radars and CPs

NOTES:  IOC 2012. The gun/missile system can be mounted on various wheeled and tracked vehicles. Wheeled versions are primarily intended for defense of stationary targets.  The system is modular, allowing for the quick replacement of parts. The gun can be used to engage ground targets.
