OVERVIEW: The KN-06 Pongae-5 battalion is a road-mobile air defense unit using the KN-06 Pongae-5 system. It is likely intended to provide area defense against airborne threats at all altitudes.

DETAILS: A KN-06 Pongae-5 unit likely consists of a FLAP LID B (NATO I-band/IEEE X-band) fire control system, and 3-4 TELs. A typical engagement begins with detection by a long range radar, such as TIN SHIELD. Illumination and guidance duties are then handed off to the FLAP LID radar which illuminates the target.

After launch, an on-board inertial navigation system guides the missile until it is captured by FLAP LID B tracking-and-guidance system. At this point, the command guidance system takes over, and directs the missile to its target.

Assuming the KN-06 is similary to the Russian 5V55K missile, it would have a 15 second preparation cycle before firing. The battery can fire a missile every 3-5 seconds. The 30N6E FLAP LID B can guide up to two missiles per target to up to six targets simultaneously.

NOTES: IOC: 2016-17. Little detail about the KN-06 is available at the time of this writin (December 2019). The KN-06 appears to be based on technology that North Korea secretly obtained from China, Russia and other countries, so much of this is estimated based on the Russian S-300PM and Chinese HQ-9/FD-2000 systems. Some sources claim the KN-06 may use a passive radar homing head for use against AEW aircraft.
