OVERVIEW: The Large Phased Array Radars (LPAR)  is a ground-based phased array radar system designed for missile warning and space surveillance, operating in the "B" Band.  

DETAILS: The Chinese LPAR may be similar to the U.S. PAVE PAWS phased array radar.  It is primarily used to detect and track sea-launched (SLBM) and intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) with a secondary mission of detecting and tracking earth orbiting satellites.  The system differs from a mechanical radar, which must be physically aimed at an object in space to detect and/or track it.  

The capabilities of the Chinese LPARs are unknown.  If similar to the AN/FPS-115 PAVE PAWS, the beam can be deflected up to 60 degrees from the arrays central boresight axis, allowing each array to cover an azimuth angle of 120 degrees, and allowing an elevation between 3 - 85 degrees.

The LPAR at Korla is the first LPAR on a rotatable turn table. The site provides early warning coverage of India, as well as providing  satellite tracking and general space surveillance. It also likely supports ASAT testing done at Korla.
