OVERVIEW: The SA-5b GAMMON aka S-200V Vega site is a static, long-range, medium-to-high altitude air defense unit using SARH guidance.

DETAILS: The SA-5b GAMMON was designed for the defense of important administrative, industrial and military installations from air attack.

A typical launch engagement begins with the detection of the target by the 2D TALL KING C radar and the ODD PAIR height finding radar. The target is passed to the SQUARE PAIR fire control radar, which illuminates the target and passes this information to the SA-5 missile while still on the launcher.

Before launch, an aft looking antenna on the missile is receives the target illumination from the 5N62 SQUARE PAIR radar. This reference signal is then used for detection of the backscatter off the target. This missile is launched using four solid-fueled strap-on rocket boosters. Approximately five seconds after launch, these burn out and separate, and the liquid fueled sustainer ignites to continue the remainder of the boost phase. The missile uses radio illumination mid-course correction to fly towards the target with a terminal semi-active radar homing phase.
