OVERVIEW: The QUEEN ELIZABETH class aircraft carrier (CV) is a STOVL-capable vessel powered  by a CODLAG propulsion system.

DETAILS:  As built, the QUEEN ELIZABETH-class are designed with Short Take-Off and Vertical Landing (STOVL) capabilities, rather than the traditional catapult and arresting gear of American aircraft carriers.  While less expensive, this will limit the range and payload of embarked fixed wing aircraft. Propulsion is provided by a CODLAG (combined Diesel-Electric  
and Gas Turbine) system that powers four Integrated Full Electric Propulsion motors at a total 95,000 SHP.  The use of electric motors also eliminates the gearbox unit in the propulsion system.
