OVERVIEW: The Type 052 Luhu-class is a two shaft, CODOG-powered missile armed destroyer (DDG).

DETAILS:
The Luhu class was a significant improvement over the previous Luda class, and designed from the keel up to integrate the latest Western electronics and armaments. The Type 052 became the first Chinese destroyer design to use gas turbine engines, and also the first equipped with an integrated combat system. The Luhu class integrated a much larger hull, modern CODOG propulsion and diesels, modern SAMs, artillery, ASW missile system, and moreover a large hangar for two ASW helicopters.

The Luhu-class made extensive use of foreign technologies that were accessible to the PRC prior to the Tiananmen Square incident of 1989, including French-made radars and fire-control systems and the General Electric LM2500 gas turbine engines.

The Type-052 uses a CODOG arrangement. Two MTU diesel engines are used to travel economic speeds. Two General Electric LM2500 gas turbines are used in combat.

The Luhu class are multi-role ships, featureing 4x4 YJ-83 (C-803) ASCMs for ASUW. For AAW, the Luhu-class destroyers were fitted with the HQ-7 SAM that gives them much better air defense capability than other previous Chinese designs, and partially correcting this deficiency in the PLAN surface fleet. For ASW, the vesseles have 2X3 torpedo tubes and ASW rockets. Sensors include both bow mounted and VDS sonar. Two helocopters are also embarked.

Subsequent analysis has called into question of the operational capability of the Luhu-class, suggesting that they were mainly intended as technology demonstration vessels rather than serious naval combatants. This is in part due to the various European systems installed were not designed to operate together.
