OVERVIEW: The COUNTRY class (Batch 1) is a COSAG-powered guided missile destroyer (DDG).

DETAILS:   The COUNTRY class (Batch 1) DDG used a combined steam and gas (COSAG) to power its two shafts. The County class was designed around the GWS1 Sea Slug beam riding anti-aircraft missile system. The ships were had good command and control facilities and were often used during their RN service as flagships.

NOTES: Units in class: DEVONSHIRE (D 02), HAMPSHIRE (D 06), KENT (D 12), LONDON (D 16). All eight of the class had short Royal Navy careers, serving on average less than 16 years. Only LONDON of the first batch was transferred (to Pakistan), while the other three Batch 1 ships were decommissioned.
