OVERVIEW: The YANKEE I (Project 667 A) is a nuclear powered ballistic missile submarine.

DETAILS:   The YANKEE SSBN was the first modern Soviet ballistic missile submarine.  Quieter than the predecessor HOTEL class, the YANKEE used special propellers for quieter propulsion,  as well as antihydroacoustic coating to the outer hull. The footings under the main and auxiliary propulsion systems were also isolated by a layer of rubber.  One unit of the class was lost at sea in October 1986 after an explosion.
