OVERVIEW: The AA-2a ATOLL (R-3S) is a short-range, solid fuel, supersonic, uncooled infrared guided (IR) air-to-air missile with a 11.3 kilogram warhead.  

DETAILS:  The AA-2a ATOLL (R-3S) is capable of only rear-aspect attacks. Like the AIM-9B, the AA-2a was only effective against non-manuvering targets at close range, and was ill suited to dogfighting at low level due to ground clutter.  Its seeker often locked on to the sun or clouds. The seeker also had a very long 22 second settling time.
