OVERVIEW: The MIM-104B PATRIOT PAC-1 (Phased Array Tracking Radar To Intercept On Target) missile is a long range, mobile, single-stage, solid fuel, inertial and command guided with Track via Missile (TVM) guidance in the terminal phase, surface-to-air missile (SAM) missile using with a 200 lb fragmentation warhead.

DETAILS: After launch, the missile is acquired by the battery radar and a missile track and command uplink beam initiated, and the missile commanded to follow an energy-saving trajectory to the target. Midcourse correction commands are transmitted to the missile from the mobile engagement control center. As the missile approaches the target, a TVM homing technique is initiated, with the target acquisition system in the missile acquiring the target and transmitting target data to the engagement control station for final course correction calculations. The course correction commands are transmitted to the missile via the command uplink.

The MIM-104 is capable of engaging targets performing continuous 6-g evasive maneuvers. The missile requires 8.3 seconds of flight time before arming, and can be prepared to fire in less than nine seconds.

The PAC-1 is a software-only modification to the MIM-104A, to give the system an upward trajectory and a high-angle sector search capability to track and kill short-range ballistic missiles.
