OVERVIEW: The Fakour-90/AIM-54A Phoenix is a long-range, semi-active/active radar guided air-to-air missile with a 60.75 kilogram proximity warhead.   

DETAILS:  The Fakour-90/AIM-54A Phoenix is a claimed indigenous Iranian developed variant of the AIM-54A.  The AIM-54A was designed primarily to defend against Soviet bomber streams, although it has a capability against fighter aircraft and low flying missiles.  The AIM-54/AWG-9 was the first air to air weapons system with a multiple track capability, allowing tracking of up to 24 targets and launch of up to 6 Phoenixes nearly simultaneously.  To achieve its long range, the AIM-54 initially uses a semi-active radar mode, intermittently receiving mid-course updates from the F-14's AWG-9 or APG-71 radar.  During this phase, the Phoenix climbs to cruise between 24,000-30,000 meters at approximately Mach 5. This high altitude gives the missile gravitational potential energy, which is later converted into kinetic energy as the missile dives at high velocity towards its target. In the terminal phase, the missile activates its own radar to provide terminal guidance.  At this time the missile is completely independent of its launching aircraft, and becomes "fire-and-forget".  The missile also has a home-on-jam mode.

NOTES: IOC 2013. There are few details on the differences between the Fakour-90 and the AIM-54A.  Speculation is that the AIM-54's radar was replaced with a reverse engineered, improved version of the U.S. MIM-23 Hawk SAM radar and with extended range.
