OVERVIEW: The SA-20b GARGOYLE B (48N6E2) aka SA-10e is a single stage, solid fuel, long-range, Track-Via-Missile (TVM), surface to air missile with anti-stealth and ABM capability. It has a 180 kg warhead utilizing a RF proximity fuze.

DETAILS: The SA-10/SA-20 series was developed as an area defense/strategic SAM system for both land and naval use. Its uses a combination of inertial navigation system (INS), command link and TVM for guidance. The TVM guidance requires target illumination from a ground station and reception of the reflected signal by the missile, which relays it back to the ground station via a datalink. The ground station then computes an interception course and uses the datalink to send guidance commands back to the missile. The missile uses a thrust vectoring system for enhanced mauverability.

NOTES: IOC 1997 (approx). The 8N6E2 is the export version of the 48N6M missile. The SA-20b is a "deep modernization" of the SA-10 system with design changes to most SA-10 components. To ensure missile reliability, the missile uses the TPK combined launch and transport container. This container was never opened until missile launch. The vertical launch technique adopted used a catapult accelerator within the container to pop the missile to an altitude 20 m above the launcher, where the main motor ignited.
