Air-to-Air BVR Duel, 1985

This series of Quick Battles is intended to serve as a laboratory to examine how technology, tactics, and doctrine affect Beyond Visual Range (BVR) fighter-versus-fighter combat in CMO.

This plane set represents the early fourth generation of fighters and the peak of semi-active radar homing (SARH) missile technology near the end of the Cold War. In particular, the R-27 (AA-10) missile’s datalink technology offers an advantage in BVR combat over most Western types. Meanwhile, look-down shoot-down radars should help to eliminate the danger of being ambushed by opponents coming from low altitude, which was the case in previous eras. Note that short-range all-aspect IR missiles have been introduced as well and have made the WVR fight shorter and more decisive than the old-fashioned tail-chase “dogfight.” Some platforms may thus benefit from a ‘Straight In’ push to WVR sooner rather than later…or not.
