OVERVIEW: A French air-dropped cluster bomb developed for anti-tank and anti-vehicle area denial. It disperses submunitions over a wide area and is optimized for use against armored and soft-skinned vehicles.

DETAIL: The BLG.66 Belouga, designed by Matra (now MBDA France), is a cylindrical cluster bomb used by French and NATO aircraft. It was designed to defeat enemy armor concentrations and provide area suppression. The casing contains 151 submunitions, each capable of independent activation and penetration. Upon release, a time fuze opens the casing, dispersing the bomblets in a controlled pattern across the target area.

This configuration employs high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) bomblets for maximum effectiveness against armored targets. The submunitions are stabilized during descent to improve angle of impact and optimize penetration. The pattern density and controlled release system enable saturation of vehicle formations or hardened positions. It provides flexible attack capability without requiring precise targeting.

The BLG.66 is deployed from tactical aircraft such as the Mirage F1, Jaguar, Mirage 2000, and Rafale. It is intended for battlefield interdiction, targeting moving columns or fixed positions. Release altitudes and patterns are adapted to terrain and threat conditions, maximizing survivability and area effect.
