OVERVIEW: The Mk 18 is a 1,000 lb retarded general-purpose bomb developed by the Royal Air Force for low-altitude strike missions. It contains a high-explosive warhead weighing approximately 450 lb (204 kg) and is equipped with a parachute-based retardation system.

DETAIL: The Mk 18 was introduced to provide a safe low-level bombing option, reducing the risk to aircraft from blast and fragmentation. Based on the Mk 13 low-drag bomb body, the Mk 18 integrates a tail-mounted retarder assembly, typically parachute or ballute type, to slow descent after release. This allows the aircraft to exit the area before detonation. The bomb retained compatibility with standard RAF fuzing options and delivery platforms. It was used for close air support, runway denial, and infrastructure strikes.

The key difference between the Mk 13 and Mk 18 is the addition of the retardation mechanism, which sacrifices some accuracy for survivability in low-level missions. The retarder enables horizontal delivery at very low altitudes without endangering the aircraft. The bomb could be configured for either impact or delayed fuzing.

Mk 18s were employed by RAF tactical aircraft such as the Jaguar and Harrier during exercises and operational deployments. They were often delivered in terrain-following strike profiles or during rapid ingress missions requiring quick egress.
