OVERVIEW: A high-yield U.S. thermonuclear bomb, the B53 was designed during the Cold War for strategic deterrence and bunker-penetrating roles. It featured a two-stage radiation implosion design and was one of the most powerful nuclear weapons ever fielded by the United States.

DETAIL: The B53 was developed by Los Alamos National Laboratory in the late 1950s and entered service in 1962. It used a Mark 6 re-entry vehicle-derived casing and incorporated a two-stage Teller-Ulam thermonuclear configuration. The "B" in its designation stands for Bomb, and it had a selectable yield estimated at up to 9 megatons. Weighing over 4,000 kg, it was housed in a massive casing with dimensions suitable for strategic bombers such as the B-52.

The B53 Mod-1 was the most widely deployed version. It featured improved safety interlocks and modifications for low-level delivery. The bomb used parachute-retarded free-fall delivery to allow bomber escape and could be fuzed for airburst or ground burst depending on the target type. It had limited tactical versatility due to its large size and destructive power but served as a critical deterrent until the end of the Cold War.

The B53 was intended for strategic bombing roles, particularly the destruction of deep underground command and control facilities. It was carried internally by B-52 aircraft and employed using high-altitude or low-level delivery profiles. Its role was eventually replaced by more accurate and lower-yield earth-penetrating weapons.
