OVERVIEW: The TAL 1 is an unguided, air-dropped cluster bomb developed by Israel, designed to disperse dual-purpose submunitions over a wide area.

DETAIL: The TAL 1 was developed by Israel Military Industries (IMI, now part of Elbit Systems) to provide the Israeli Air Force with an effective area-denial weapon against infantry and lightly armored targets. The bomb carries 270 dual-purpose bomblets capable of inflicting both fragmentation and anti-armor damage, each fitted with a small shaped charge and a fragmentation casing. The dispenser is designed to open mid-air at a programmed altitude to ensure optimal coverage.

It employs a cylindrical casing with stabilizing fins and a mechanical or electronic time fuze to ensure accurate dispersal. The TAL 1 was designed for compatibility with a wide range of aircraft, including legacy and modern tactical fighters. Its use enhances the ability to attack dispersed formations or area targets like artillery, missile sites, or armored columns.

Operational deployment has been confirmed with the Israeli Air Force, and it has been offered for export under various configurations. The bomb is considered a precursor to more advanced IMI cluster systems such as TAL 2 and MPR-500 series.
