OVERVIEW: Unguided, free-fall cluster bomb designed to release 50 anti-personnel fragmentation bomblets over a wide area. Each submunition contains a shaped steel casing and internal charge designed to maximize ground-level lethality.

DETAIL: Developed in the 1970s by South Africa, the Alpha Bomb system was adapted from a Rhodesian design for use by Canberra bombers. The hopper contained 50 Alpha bomblets, each weighing approximately 6 kg and shaped like a sphere (155 mm diameter). Upon impact, the bomblet would bounce upward and detonate after a short delay, dispersing steel fragments and up to 240 rubber pellets to maximize injury radius. The submunitions used a dual-shell construction with a central explosive and were designed for psychological as well as lethal impact.

The hopper was mounted in the bomb bay of the Canberra B(I).12, allowing sequential release over target areas. The delivery was conducted in a ripple pattern to maximize area coverage and was optimized for low-altitude bombing runs. While intended primarily for anti-personnel use, it was also effective against light structures and soft-skinned vehicles.
