OVERVIEW: The Mk17 is a 1,000 lb general-purpose bomb designed for the Royal Air Force. It was used by the RAF and later adopted by Argentina for Canberra bomber operations.

DETAIL: Developed in the United Kingdom, the Mk17 was a low-drag, free-fall bomb optimized for high-speed delivery from jet aircraft. It incorporated a thick-walled forged steel casing and a large high-explosive filling, making it suitable for attacks against infrastructure, hardened ground targets, and troop concentrations. Its design included tail units for aerodynamic stability and standard NATO-compatible fuzing options.

Within the RAF, the Mk17 was commonly employed on Vulcan, Canberra, and other tactical aircraft during the Cold War, typically in strategic or conventional strike roles. It could be configured with various fuzes for airburst, impact, or delayed detonation depending on mission requirements. The bomb was part of standard RAF bomb loads from the 1950s through the 1980s.

Argentina acquired and used the Mk17 bomb with its fleet of English Electric Canberra B.62 aircraft. During the 1982 Falklands War, Argentine Canberras deployed Mk17s in strike missions against British positions. The bomb was delivered at low altitude to reduce exposure to air defenses, though with limited accuracy due to lack of guidance.
