OVERVIEW: The WE.177C was a high-yield air-dropped thermonuclear bomb fielded by the United Kingdom for strategic strike missions.

DETAIL: The WE.177C was developed as part of the UK's independent nuclear deterrent and used a two-stage thermonuclear design based on the U.S.-derived Red Snow physics package. While similar in construction to the WE.177B, the C-variant was optimized for strategic roles and high-yield delivery. It featured internal modifications and a different configuration to accommodate specific mission requirements.

Unlike the B-variant, which had both tactical and strategic flexibility, the WE.177C was retained solely for strategic use and was deployed with longer-range aircraft. Its compact design allowed for compatibility with a range of RAF platforms, although it was primarily assigned to the Tornado GR1 and Vulcan B.2. The bomb could be delivered in free-fall or parachute-retarded modes, suitable for low-level penetration missions.

The WE.177C remained operational from its introduction in 1973 until the complete retirement of the WE.177 series in 1998. It was part of NATO’s nuclear sharing arrangement but remained under UK national control.
