OVERVIEW: A next-generation 2,000 lb class air-dropped fragmentation bomb designed for area attack. The BLU-136/B NGAAW (Next Generation Area Attack Weapon) is intended to deliver wide-area anti-personnel and anti-material effects with minimized unexploded ordnance risk.

DETAIL: The BLU-136/B was developed by the U.S. Air Force under the Next Generation Area Attack Weapon program as a replacement for cluster munitions. Its steel body integrates preformed fragmentation elements and an advanced explosive fill optimized for uniform dispersion. Unlike traditional cluster bombs, the BLU-136 uses a unitary warhead with airburst capabilities, reducing the chance of unexploded bomblets.

This weapon introduces a new standard in anti-personnel and area denial effectiveness by combining large blast output with dense, consistent fragmentation patterns. Designed for compatibility with Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) kits, it offers precision delivery options. It can be fitted with a variety of USAF fuzes, including proximity and time-delay types, for controlled detonation.

Operational use is focused on suppressing enemy personnel, light vehicles, and infrastructure in open or semi-sheltered environments. Its non-cluster configuration aligns with U.S. policy to phase out legacy cluster munitions. The bomb is deployed from high-performance aircraft using precision guidance to ensure accuracy and minimize collateral effects.
