OVERVIEW: The CBU-89/B GATOR is an unguided, air-delivered cluster munition designed for area denial by scattering anti-tank and anti-personnel mines. It enables rapid deployment of mixed minefields from tactical aircraft.

DETAIL: The CBU-89/B uses the SUU-64/B tactical dispenser to release 60 mines mid-flight: 45 BLU-91/B anti-tank and 15 BLU-92/B anti-personnel mines. The BLU-91/B mines use magnetic sensors to detect vehicles and activate shaped charges aimed at their underbellies, while the BLU-92/B mines are designed to injure or kill dismounted personnel using fragmentation effects. Both mines include self-destruct timers and self-deactivation features to reduce long-term hazards.

The GATOR was developed as a successor to earlier mine-scattering bombs like the CBU-78. It offered improved reliability, better fuzing safety, and more effective battlefield coverage. The minefield density and pattern are determined by altitude and speed at release, calculated through the aircraft’s delivery system.

It is deployed by aircraft such as the F-16, F-15E, F/A-18, and B-52 from medium altitudes. The weapon is typically used to deny access to key areas, delay enemy maneuver, or protect flanks by creating temporary barriers in support of friendly operations.
