OVERVIEW: The Mk 13 is a 1,000 lb class, low-drag general-purpose bomb developed for the Royal Air Force for use in tactical bombing roles. It contains a high-explosive warhead weighing approximately 450 lb (204 kg).

DETAIL: The Mk 13 was designed in the post-WWII period to meet RAF requirements for a streamlined, free-fall general-purpose bomb suitable for supersonic and subsonic aircraft. It features a slender aerodynamic casing for reduced drag and greater stability in ballistic trajectories. The bomb employs a cast steel body filled with high explosive and supports various nose and tail fuzing configurations. It was typically used in conventional strike missions and adaptable for low- or medium-altitude delivery.

Compared to earlier British GP bombs, the Mk 13 offers improved accuracy through better ballistic performance and compatibility with modern aircraft bomb racks. Though unguided, it was often delivered with advanced targeting equipment onboard strike aircraft, increasing effectiveness. It was later phased out by more advanced guided munitions but remained in service into the late Cold War era.

The Mk 13 was typically carried by fast jets like the Jaguar and Tornado GR1, and could be released in level, dive, or toss-bombing modes depending on mission profile. It was suitable for runway cratering, depot strikes, and general infrastructure attacks.
