OVERVIEW: The FZ 70 is an unguided 70mm (2.75-inch) air-to-surface rocket developed by Belgium for use from helicopters and light aircraft. It is equipped with a wide range of warheads and is designed for anti-personnel, anti-vehicle, and area suppression roles.

DETAILS: The FZ 70 rocket system was developed by Forges de Zeebrugge (FZ), now part of Thales Belgium, to provide NATO-standard 70mm unguided rocket capability for rotary- and fixed-wing aircraft. The rocket is compatible with standard 70 mm (2.75-inch) launcher systems and offers modularity through interchangeable warheads and fuzes. It is designed with a high-velocity motor for improved accuracy and effectiveness in both single and ripple fire missions. The system conforms to STANAG 4187 for interoperability across NATO platforms.

The FZ 70 supports a variety of warhead types, including High Explosive (HE), High Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT), High Explosive Dual Purpose (HEDP), smoke, illumination, and practice versions. The warheads can be fitted with point-detonating, proximity, or delayed-action fuzes depending on mission requirements. The FZ 70's modularity makes it adaptable to a wide range of tactical roles, including suppression of enemy personnel, light armor neutralization, and marking.

It is launched from multi-tube pods such as the FZ233 (7-tube) or FZ225 (19-tube), mounted on platforms like attack helicopters, armed reconnaissance aircraft, or light strike UAVs. The rocket is preloaded and integrated into basic ballistic fire control systems for ripple or single-shot engagement modes. Used for close support missions, the FZ 70 is valued for its versatility and adaptability in asymmetric or conventional warfare.
