OVERVIEW: The MW‑1 (Mehrzweckwaffe 1) is a German air‑launched dispenser designed to deliver a mix of anti‑tank and anti‑personnel submunitions.

DETAILS: MW‑1 is a fixed external dispenser introduced in 1985 for the Tornado IDS and later adapted for other aircraft. The internal configuration supports multiple submunition types such as shaped‑charge anti‑tank bomblets and anti‑personnel fragmentation mines released in flight to create dense target coverage. The munition tubes open to deploy bomblets laterally, enabling runway denial and area interdiction. Designed for high‑speed low‑altitude delivery, It holds 2,268 anti‑tank and 336 anti‑personnel bomblets, saturating enemy positions and airfields. it fills battlefield roles similar to the British JP233.

FUNCTION: Held externally under the aircraft wing or fuselage, the MW‑1 opens during flight to eject its submunitions. These then deploy parachutes or spin to position correctly before activating, creating minefields or explosive effects over designated zones.
