OVERVIEW: The SEAL Commando (Air) refers to air-inserted operations conducted by U.S. Navy SEALs, a naval special warfare unit specializing in direct action, counter-terrorism, and special reconnaissance. SEALs employ air insertion methods such as HALO/HAHO parachuting and helicopter fast-roping to conduct rapid, covert strikes in hostile or denied environments.

DETAILS: SEAL stands for Sea, Air, and Land, reflecting the unit’s capability to operate across all terrains. The SEALs were officially formed in 1962 under the U.S. Navy to execute unconventional warfare and maritime special operations, with air mobility later becoming a primary method of insertion for inland and time-sensitive missions. Airborne-qualified SEALs train extensively in HALO (High Altitude Low Opening) and HAHO (High Altitude High Opening) parachuting, allowing silent, long-range insertion from high altitude. Rotary-wing platforms such as MH-60 and MH-47 are used for fast-roping, rappelling, and landing in confined or hostile zones.

FUNCTION: SEALs using air insertion methods operate behind enemy lines to conduct sabotage, capture or kill missions, surveillance, and hostage rescue. Air operations allow access to inland or mountainous targets inaccessible by sea, and minimize detection through altitude, terrain masking, or night-time infiltration.
