OVERVIEW: The Harrier GR.5A belongs to the second generation of the Harrier family, a subsonic, single-engine, V/STOL (Vertical and/or Short Take-Off and Landin), ground-attack and close air support aircraft developed for the Royal Air Force. It is a modified version of the AV-8B platform tailored to British low-level strike requirements.

DETAILS: The Harrier GR.5A was developed through a UK-US collaboration between British Aerospace and McDonnell Douglas to provide a modern battlefield interdiction aircraft with V/STOL capability. It is powered by a Rolls-Royce Pegasus 11-61 vectored-thrust turbofan engine and features seven external hardpoints for weapons and stores. The airframe includes composite materials for reduced weight and radar signature, with updated cockpit systems such as a wide-angle HUD and digital INS. The aircraft has no radar and relies on a nose-mounted laser rangefinder and marked-target seeker for targeting. Its maximum speed is approximately Mach 0.9. Defensive systems include an internal RWR and flare/chaff dispensers, though specific model numbers remain unconfirmed.

The “GR” designation stands for “Ground attack/Reconnaissance.” The GR.5A variant added updated internal wiring and avionics improvements over the baseline GR.5, enabling compatibility with future systems such as the TIALD targeting pod. It retained the same airframe and propulsion but was optimized for upgrade potential and improved maintainability.

TYPE: V/STOL strike aircraft

FUNCTION: The GR.5A was primarily used for close air support and tactical strike missions at low altitude, making full use of its V/STOL capability for dispersed forward basing. Its design allowed operations from short or improvised runways near front-line positions.

NOTE:
IOC: 1990 (GR.5A), 1987 (GR.5 baseline)
Operators: United Kingdom
Conflict used in: None (GR.5A variant was not used in combat)
