OVERVIEW: The Harrier GR.7 belongs to the second generation of the Harrier family, a subsonic, single-engine, V/STOL (Vertical and/or Short Take-Off and Landing), ground-attack and close air support aircraft operated by the Royal Air Force. The 1995 configuration was an upgraded version of the original GR.7, incorporating the Zeus electronic countermeasures suite and a missile approach warning system (MAWS) to improve survivability in high-threat environments.

DETAILS: This upgraded GR.7 configuration entered operational service in 1995 as part of an incremental improvement over the baseline GR.7 introduced in 1990. It retained the Rolls-Royce Pegasus Mk 105 turbofan engine producing approximately 21,750 lbf of thrust and continued to support V/STOL operations. The aircraft features seven external hardpoints, a composite fuselage structure, and avionics including an INS/GPS navigation system, nose-mounted forward-looking infrared (FLIR), and MIL-STD-1553 databus. The 1995 upgrade added the Marconi Zeus electronic countermeasures system and a Plessey missile approach warning system (MAWS) mounted in the tail for automatic threat detection. Defensive systems also included an internal radar warning receiver and integrated chaff/flare dispensers; the aircraft’s top speed remained approximately Mach 0.9.

The “GR” stands for “Ground attack/Reconnaissance.” This upgraded GR.7 introduced in 1995 added survivability improvements through the Zeus ECM and MAWS, building on the earlier night-attack configuration of the 1990 GR.7. It did not include radar, relying instead on optical and infrared systems for navigation and targeting.

TYPE: V/STOL multirole strike aircraft

FUNCTION: The aircraft was primarily used for low-level strike and close air support roles where V/STOL operations and electronic self-protection allowed forward deployment near front-line positions under elevated threat levels.
