OVERVIEW: The Harrier GR.7 belongs to the second generation of the Harrier family, a subsonic, single-engine, V/STOL (Vertical and/or Short Take-Off and Landin), ground-attack and close air support aircraft developed for the Royal Air Force. It is an upgraded version of the GR.5, incorporating night-attack capability and improved avionics for tactical operations.

DETAILS: The GR.7 entered service in 1990 as a further development of the British Harrier II, tailored for RAF strike missions. It is powered by the Rolls-Royce Pegasus Mk 105 turbofan engine, delivering approximately 21,750 lbf of thrust and enabling vertical/short takeoff and landing operations. The aircraft retains seven hardpoints for external stores and a reinforced composite airframe structure for reduced weight and improved durability. It features an integrated inertial navigation system (INS), a nose-mounted forward-looking infrared (FLIR) camera, and a night vision goggle-compatible cockpit. There is no onboard radar; target acquisition relies on optical systems. Defensive features include internal radar warning receivers and flare/chaff dispensers, though exact system models are unconfirmed.

The “GR” stands for “Ground attack/Reconnaissance.” The GR.7 introduced improved avionics over the GR.5, including a new mission computer, MIL-STD-1553 digital databus, FLIR integration, and night-operations capability. It retained the same propulsion system and airframe layout as the GR.5 but was internally upgraded for better night flying and systems compatibility.

TYPE: V/STOL multirole strike aircraft

FUNCTION: The GR.7 was used for low-level strike and close air support missions in forward deployment scenarios. Its V/STOL ability and improved night capability made it effective for dispersed operations from austere locations.
