OVERVIEW: The AV-8S Harrier belongs to the first generation of the Harrier family, a single-engine, subsonic V/STOL light attack aircraft derived from the British Harrier GR.3, designed for short-range strike and reconnaissance missions. It was acquired by the Royal Thai Navy for operations from the light aircraft carrier HTMS Chakri Naruebet.

DETAILS: The AV-8S is powered by a Rolls-Royce Pegasus Mk 103 turbofan engine providing thrust vectoring for vertical and short takeoff and landing. It features five external hardpoints for a mix of unguided bombs, rocket pods, and air-to-air missiles, and retains a basic avionics suite for day-only operations. The aircraft lacks radar but is equipped with the Sky Guardian 200 RWR (ARI 18228/19) for threat detection and warning. Top speed is approximately Mach 0.94, and the aircraft was designed for operation from short deck carriers or austere airfields.

The designation “AV-8S” was specific to the Spanish Navy’s export version of the AV-8A, and the aircraft later transferred to Thailand retained this configuration. The Thai AV-8S retained limited upgrade paths and remained largely similar to the 1970s AV-8A standard, lacking night or all-weather capability. Its Sky Guardian 200 system provided basic self-protection but no radar or advanced targeting was integrated.
