OVERVIEW: The EP-3 is a four-engine, long-range signals intelligence (SIGINT) aircraft derived from the P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft and operated by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. It is used for airborne surveillance, electronic intelligence collection, and radar signal interception in support of national defense and regional situational awareness.

DETAILS: The Japanese EP-3 was developed by Kawasaki Heavy Industries using the P-3C Orion platform, entering service in 1994 with the Airborne Warning and Control Squadron under the Air Tactics Development Wing. It is configured for long-range ELINT and COMINT missions and features extensive onboard signal analysis capabilities, including operator consoles and dedicated mission systems. Powered by four Allison T56-A-14 turboprop engines, it has a cruising speed of approximately 650 km/h and a maximum range exceeding 5,500 km. The aircraft is equipped for maritime and land-based surveillance over contested regions, particularly around the East China Sea.

The EP-3 carries the AN/APS-115 surface search radar in a ventral fairing for maritime surveillance. Its primary SIGINT equipment includes the NH/HLR-107 (low-band) and NH/HLR-108 (high-band) electronic intelligence suites developed by NEC and Mitsubishi Electric, covering wide frequency spectrums for radar and communication interception. The aircraft also features dorsal and ventral antenna arrays, electronic surveillance receivers, and data processing systems. These capabilities allow it to perform electronic order of battle mapping and provide strategic support to both peacetime monitoring and joint operational readiness.

TYPE: Strategic Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) Aircraft

FUNCTION: Performs long-range electronic signal collection and threat emitter identification to support national situational awareness, early warning, and force preparation. It is optimized for passive electronic surveillance in contested or sensitive regions.
