OVERVIEW: The Fokker 50UTA is a utility transport and surveillance aircraft operated by the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF), based on the Dutch-built Fokker 50 airframe. Entering service in 1996, it is used for maritime patrol, surveillance, transport, and secondary intelligence roles.

DETAILS: The Fokker 50UTA (Utility Transport Aircraft) is a militarized variant of the Fokker 50 turboprop airliner tailored to meet the RSAF’s requirements for multi-role utility and maritime surveillance. Acquired in the mid-1990s, the aircraft was modified to perform missions such as aerial patrol, border monitoring, logistics support, and possibly secondary ELINT/SIGINT roles. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW125B turboprop engines, it cruises at approximately Mach 0.39 (around 500 km/h) with a range of about 2,000 km depending on loadout and mission profile. The aircraft features upgraded avionics and military communication systems for networked ISR operations.

RSAF’s Fokker 50 fleet includes both UTA and Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) variants; while the UTA lacks the full sensor suite of the MPA, it can be outfitted with mission kits depending on tasking. The airframe retains its short takeoff and landing capability and is optimized for operations from regional bases and island airstrips.

TYPE: Utility and Surveillance Aircraft

FUNCTION: Supports maritime and territorial surveillance, light transport, and multi-role ISR with rapid reconfiguration for national security and peacetime patrol missions. Its versatility and reliability make it suited for extended regional operations in Singapore’s airspace and EEZ.
