OVERVIEW: The ES-3A Shadow is a carrier-based ELINT reconnaissance aircraft derived from the S-3A Viking airframe. It was designed to provide real-time radar signal intelligence and electronic threat detection in support of carrier battle group operations.

DETAILS: The ES-3A was developed in the early 1990s by converting 16 S-3A Viking anti-submarine aircraft into electronic reconnaissance platforms under the Tactical Airborne Reconnaissance System (TARS) program. It entered service with the U.S. Navy in 1995, replacing the EA-3B Skywarrior in the carrier-based ELINT role. The aircraft featured fuselage and wing-mounted antenna fairings, internal mission systems, and operator consoles for radar signal interception and analysis. Powered by two General Electric TF34-GE-2 turbofan engines, the ES-3A had a top speed of about Mach 0.65 and an operational range of approximately 2,000 nautical miles.

The “ES” designation stands for “Electronic Surveillance,” and “3A” denotes it as the ELINT-configured version of the S-3 series. The ES-3A was equipped with advanced radar intercept systems, electronic support measures, and directional finding antennas. It retained full carrier-operating capabilities and was deployed aboard U.S. Navy aircraft carriers until its retirement.

TYPE: Carrier-Based ELINT Reconnaissance Aircraft

FUNCTION: The ES-3A was used to collect and analyze radar emissions in support of threat detection and situational awareness for naval strike groups. It provided tactical electronic intelligence during carrier air wing operations without reliance on land-based assets.
