OVERVIEW: The Tp 85 is a tactical ELINT reconnaissance aircraft used by the Swedish Air Force. Based on the Sud Aviation SE‑210 Caravelle III airliner, it was introduced in 1973 to replace Canberra-based SIGINT platforms and focused on electronic intelligence collection.

DETAILS: Sweden acquired two former SAS Caravelle III airframes in 1971 and converted them for FRA signal intelligence starting in 1973. The aircraft were fitted with a lengthened radome nose, canoe-shaped underbelly fairings, cheek antenna pods, dorsal blade arrays, and wingtip sensors to intercept and geolocate foreign radar emissions. Powered by two Rolls‑Royce Avon RA.29 Mk 527B turbojets, they cruised at around 850 km/h, reached service ceilings near 12 000 m, and had an ELINT mission range of approximately 3 200 km. Each carried a crew of three and featured multiple operator consoles working with specialized receivers, geolocation systems, and data links.

The designation “Tp 85” is the Swedish military code for Caravelle III configured for ELINT systems were fitted. It was not a general-purpose transport aircraft. Secretive at its inception, it flew numerous missions over the Baltic Sea against Warsaw Pact systems and remained in service until 1998 when it was replaced by Gulfstream IV SIGINT platforms.

TYPE: Tactical ELINT Reconnaissance Aircraft

FUNCTION: Designed to passively detect, classify, and geolocate radar emissions to build electronic orders of battle and support national defense. Its high cruise speed, long range, and operator-centric console systems provided discreet ELINT coverage during the Cold War.
