OVERVIEW: The Gulfstream III SMA-3 is a Danish maritime surveillance and utility aircraft derived from the Gulfstream III business jet. Entering service in 1984, it was used by the Royal Danish Air Force for maritime patrol, fisheries protection, and search and rescue (SAR) operations.

DETAILS: The SMA-3 was equipped with a Texas Instruments AN/APS-127 surface-search radar housed in a central ventral fairing for detecting vessels and conducting maritime reconnaissance. It retained the Gulfstream III airframe with two Rolls-Royce Spey 511-8 turbofan engines, a cruising speed of Mach 0.80, and an approximate range of 6,760 km. The aircraft featured an internal mission console, utility cabin, and flare/chaff dispensers for basic self-defense. It was fitted with a right-side cargo door (1.6 m × 2.11 m) to allow modular mission reconfiguration, combining maritime patrol and VIP/utility transport roles.

The SMA-3 configuration was specific to Denmark, without SIGINT or EW systems, and focused on maritime surface monitoring. Its multi-role flexibility made it useful for national peacetime tasks like fisheries enforcement and maritime search operations. It was Denmark’s first special mission Gulfstream platform and operated until its replacement by newer assets.

TYPE: Maritime Patrol and Utility Aircraft

FUNCTION: Performs maritime surveillance, SAR, and utility transport using onboard radar for surface detection and flexible reconfiguration. It was used for coastal security, fisheries patrol, and national emergency response.
