OVERVIEW: The C-295M (CC-1) is a twin-turboprop tactical transport aircraft modified for airborne signals intelligence (SIGINT) missions. Operated by the Finnish Air Force under the Dragon Shield program, it serves in the airborne electronic surveillance and intelligence-gathering role.

DETAILS: The C-295M is a military transport aircraft developed by CASA (now Airbus Defence and Space), designed for tactical airlift and multi-role utility missions. Finland acquired the platform and modified it into a SIGINT aircraft under the "Dragon Shield" program with Israeli assistance, entering operational service in 2013. The aircraft features fuselage-mounted sensor fairings and antenna arrays for interception and analysis of radar and communication emissions. It is powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127G turboprop engines, with a cruise speed of approximately 480 km/h and a range over 2,000 km depending on payload and mission profile.

The designation "CC-1" is the Finnish Air Force's internal code for the C-295M SIGINT configuration. Under the Dragon Shield upgrade, the aircraft was equipped with Israeli-developed systems for ELINT and COMINT missions. Externally, the variant is distinguished by large fairings along the lower fuselage and wingtips, and internally includes workstations for electronic warfare operators. The aircraft is primarily used for regional surveillance and early warning tasks along Finland’s eastern borders and within NATO-cooperative intelligence frameworks.

TYPE: Tactical Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) Aircraft

FUNCTION: Provides airborne surveillance, electronic intercept, and signal mapping for intelligence, early warning, and threat monitoring. Its small footprint and persistent coverage make it suitable for border surveillance and regional intelligence missions.
