OVERVIEW: The MC-55A Peregrine is an Australian signals intelligence (SIGINT) and electronic surveillance aircraft based on the Gulfstream G550 platform. Entering service in 2021, it is operated by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) for strategic intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions across the Indo-Pacific.

DETAILS: The MC-55A Peregrine program was initiated to enhance Australia’s airborne SIGINT capabilities by integrating advanced electronic surveillance systems into the long-range Gulfstream G550 airframe. Acquired under Project AIR 555, the aircraft was extensively modified by L3Harris Technologies to perform communications intelligence (COMINT), electronic intelligence (ELINT), and geolocation of electronic emitters. Powered by two Rolls-Royce BR710C4-11 turbofan engines, the G550 cruises at Mach 0.85 and has a range of over 12,500 km, providing endurance for extended regional surveillance. Its mission includes identifying and tracking electronic threats, collecting signals of interest, and supporting joint and allied intelligence operations.

The MC-55A features multiple mission consoles, SATCOM systems, and a full suite of passive sensors mounted in various external fairings, including dorsal, ventral, and side-mounted antennas. Although the exact system models remain undisclosed, its configuration allows for real-time processing and dissemination of intelligence. The aircraft plays a central role in Australia's electronic warfare ecosystem and is fully interoperable with U.S. and allied ISR frameworks.

TYPE: SIGINT Reconnaissance Aircraft

FUNCTION: Delivers strategic airborne intelligence by detecting, locating, and analyzing electromagnetic emissions to support national security, coalition operations, and regional situational awareness. It is optimized for long-range, persistent surveillance in contested electronic environments.
