OVERVIEW: The Su‑24MP Fencer F is a dedicated tactical ELINT/EW aircraft operated by the Soviet, and later Russian, Air Force. Introduced in the early 1980s it specializes in radar emitter detection, jamming, and battlefield electronic support.

DETAILS: Developed from the Su‑24M Fencer D strike aircraft, the Su‑24MP emerged from prototypes in 1980 and entered production around 1983. Only around 10 were built and they were fielded by Frontal Aviation, with some deployed to East Germany and Ukraine before consolidation in Russia by 1993. The MP variant is powered by two Lyulka AL‑21F‑3A afterburning turbofan engines, cruises at approximately 750 kt, and served through the 1990s. Externally it is distinguishable by a large rectangular antenna fairing beneath its nose, twin "hockey-stick" antennas behind the engine intakes, dielectric nose panels, and occasional ventral pods housing SPS‑6 Los’, Mimoza jammers, or decoy launchers. The onboard Landysh EW suite supports radar detection, geolocation, and jamming, while retaining a GSh‑6‑23 cannon and up to four R‑60 missiles for self-defense.

The designation “Su‑24MP” (MP = Modifikatsirovannyy Postanovshchik Pomekh - Modified Jammer) replaces the Su‑24M’s attack radar and laser/TV targeting suite with electronic warfare systems. It maintained terrain-following radar but lost ground-attack avionics. Its mission profile is focused on battlefield suppression and standoff ELINT, not bombing or reconnaissance imagery.

TYPE: Tactical ELINT/EW Aircraft

FUNCTION: Designed for suppression and confusion of enemy air defenses, the Su‑24MP detects and jams radar emitters ahead of strike packages. With onboard electronic suites and self-defense armament it supports tactical aircraft by clearing the electronic battlespace.
