OVERVIEW: The Su-30MK Flanker H is a twin-engine, two-seat, 4th generation multirole fighter aircraft developed by Sukhoi for export, serving as the basis for more advanced national variants. India operated the Su-30MK as an interim platform before transitioning to the customized Su-30MKI configuration.

DETAILS: The Su-30MK was delivered to India beginning in 1997 under a limited procurement deal before the fully customized Su-30MKI was ready for production. It used the Su-27UB airframe with twin-seat layout and retained standard AL-31F engines without thrust vectoring. The aircraft was equipped with the N001V radar system, which supported basic look-down/shoot-down capability and could employ R-27, R-73, and R-77 air-to-air missiles, along with unguided bombs and rockets. It had 12 hardpoints for external stores, and included IRST, internal RWR, and basic ECM functionality. Maximum speed was around Mach 2.0, and the aircraft was designed for long-range air superiority missions with some limited ground-attack capability.

“Su” refers to the Sukhoi design bureau, and “MK” stands for “Modernizirovannyi Kommercheskiy” (Modernized Commercial), marking it as an export variant with basic multirole capabilities. The Indian Air Force received 8 Su-30MK units between 1997 and 1999, which were later upgraded or reconfigured to Su-30MKI standard. This initial variant lacked thrust-vectoring nozzles, canards, or the advanced avionics suite that defined the later MKI configuration.

TYPE: Multirole export fighter

FUNCTION: The Su-30MK was used by India as a stopgap multirole fighter for long-range interception and air dominance while the Su-30MKI was in development. Its two-seat configuration and range made it effective for air patrol and integration into Indian air defense networks.
