OVERVIEW: The Su-30MKI Mk2 Flanker H is a twin-engine, two-seat, 4.5 generation Supermaneuverable multirole fighter aircraft developed jointly by Sukhoi and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Indian Air Force. The 2016 Mk2 version introduced updated onboard electronics, improved reliability, and served as a transition standard toward integration of future Indian-developed systems.

DETAILS: The Su-30MKI Mk2 is an evolutionary production standard of the Su-30MKI based on the Su-27UB airframe, featuring thrust-vectoring AL-31FP engines, canards for enhanced maneuverability, and 12 hardpoints for multirole loadouts. It retains the N011M Bars passive electronically scanned array radar and IRST but includes improved mission computers and software updates to support Indian-developed weapons. The aircraft is compatible with R-73 and R-77 air-to-air missiles, Kh-31 and Kh-29 air-to-surface missiles, and KAB-500 guided bombs, with preparations for Astra Mk1 and BrahMos-A integration underway by 2016. Additional onboard systems include helmet-mounted sight, internal RWR, electronic warfare suite, and French and Israeli avionics subsystems. HAL-built Mk2 aircraft began delivery in mid-2015 and were fully operational in service by 2016. Flanker-H is the NATO reporting name assigned to this Su-30MKI variant.

“Su” designates Sukhoi, “MK” stands for “Modernizirovannyi Kommercheskiy” (Modernized Commercial), “I” for India, and “Mk2” denotes the second major Indian production and systems upgrade standard. The Mk2 included enhancements to digital architecture, improved flight control software, and Indian system readiness while retaining core Indo-Russian-French-Israeli avionics. It laid the foundation for integration of indigenous weapons and subsystems such as Astra and BrahMos on later units.

TYPE: Multirole air superiority fighter

FUNCTION: The Su-30MKI Mk2 is used for long-range air superiority, precision strike, and multirole missions, offering enhanced integration with domestic weapons and improved combat software. Its upgraded systems and architecture support India’s transition to indigenous air combat capabilities.
