OVERVIEW: The Su-30MK2 Flanker G is a twin-engine, two-seat, 4th generation multirole fighter aircraft developed by Sukhoi for export, featuring enhanced air-to-surface and maritime strike capabilities. Uganda acquired this variant to establish long-range air superiority and ground-attack capability within its regional defense posture.

DETAILS: The Su-30MK2 is an upgraded export variant of the Su-30MK platform, equipped for both air-to-air and air-to-surface missions with improved radar and weapon integration. It retains the Su-27UB airframe, two-seat configuration, and uses AL-31F engines, allowing speeds up to Mach 2.0. The aircraft is fitted with the N001VEP radar, enabling compatibility with Kh-29T/L air-to-surface missiles, Kh-31A/P anti-ship missiles, and R-77 active radar-guided air-to-air missiles. It also includes an IRST sensor, internal RWR, basic ECM capability, and 12 external hardpoints for weapons and stores. Uganda received six Su-30MK2 units from Russia starting in 2011, with operational service achieved by 2013.

“Su” refers to the Sukhoi design bureau, and “MK2” stands for “Modernizirovannyi Kommercheskiy 2” (Modernized Commercial version 2), indicating its enhanced export-standard configuration. Compared to the baseline Su-30MK, the MK2 adds maritime strike and precision-guided weapon support through upgraded radar and fire control systems. Uganda selected this variant to provide strategic air defense and regional strike reach with multirole flexibility.

TYPE: Multirole maritime strike fighter

FUNCTION: The Su-30MK2 is primarily used by Uganda for air superiority, deep strike, and strategic deterrence roles, providing long-range multirole capability across diverse mission types. Its endurance and payload capacity make it the centerpiece of Uganda’s combat aviation forces.
