OVERVIEW: The Su-30MKI Mk2 Flanker H is a twin-engine, two-seat, 4.5 generation Supermaneuverable multirole fighter aircraft built by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) under license from Sukhoi for the Indian Air Force. The 2018 Mk2 version featured improved reliability, enhanced digital architecture, and expanded compatibility with Indian air-to-air and precision-guided weapons.

DETAILS: The Su-30MKI Mk2, based on the Su-27UB airframe, incorporates thrust-vectoring AL-31FP engines, canards, and 12 hardpoints for a wide multirole weapons load. The 2018-standard aircraft continued use of the N011M Bars radar and IRST, with updated mission computers and indigenous software improvements enabling integration of Indian-developed weapons such as the Astra Mk1 beyond-visual-range missile. It remains compatible with R-73 and R-77 air-to-air missiles, Kh-29 and Kh-31 air-to-surface missiles, and KAB-500 guided bombs. Select units were modified to begin limited carriage trials of the BrahMos-A air-launched cruise missile. Onboard systems include helmet-mounted sight, RWR, internal ECM, and avionics sourced from Russia, France (Thales HUD), and Israel (EW systems). Flanker-H is the NATO reporting name assigned to this Su-30MKI variant.

“Su” refers to Sukhoi, “MK” stands for “Modernizirovannyi Kommercheskiy” (Modernized Commercial), “I” for India, and “Mk2” identifies the second-generation Indian production configuration. The 2018 Mk2 standard included improved system integration for indigenous weapons, increased fault tolerance, and advanced mission software upgrades. These modifications supported the IAF’s long-term goal of reducing dependence on imported munitions and increasing indigenous operational flexibility.

TYPE: Multirole air superiority fighter

FUNCTION: The Su-30MKI Mk2 is employed for long-range air dominance, deep-strike missions, and multirole flexibility, with increasing emphasis on indigenous weapon compatibility. Its updated electronics and enhanced integration capability position it as a transitional standard toward future upgrades under the Super Sukhoi program.
