OVERVIEW: The J-16 Flying Shark is a twin-engine, two-seat, 4.5 generation multirole strike fighter developed by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation for the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). Entering service in 2014 and further enhanced by 2018, it is a domestic derivative of the Su-30MKK, equipped with long-range weapons like the PL-15.

DETAILS: The J-16 is structurally based on the Su-30MKK airframe but redesigned with composite materials, WS-10A turbofan engines, and entirely Chinese systems, reaching speeds around Mach 2.0. It retains 12 external hardpoints and is equipped with a Chinese AESA radar, IRST system, digital RWR, internal ECM, and a modern glass cockpit with a helmet-mounted display. By 2018, the J-16 was integrated with the PL-15 beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile, significantly extending its air combat engagement range. It also carries PL-10 short-range missiles, AKD-88 cruise missiles, and guided bombs like LS-6 and GB-series.

“J” denotes “Jianjiji” (fighter), and “16” reflects its progression beyond the J-11 family. The 2018 configuration of the J-16 introduced the PL-15 missile and further radar upgrades, extending the aircraft’s combat envelope while maintaining strike capability. It remains a central element of China’s multirole tactical aviation forces.

TYPE: Multirole strike fighter

FUNCTION: The J-16 is used for long-range air dominance, precision strike, and standoff engagement roles. Its AESA radar and PL-15 integration enable high-threat interception at extended ranges while retaining strike versatility.
