OVERVIEW: The Su-34 Fullback is a twin-engine, two-seat, 4.5 generation supersonic strike fighter developed by Sukhoi for the Russian Air Force. Derived from the Su-27IB prototype, the 2019 version expanded its precision-strike role with integration of advanced glide bombs such as the UPAB series.

DETAILS: Based on the Su-27 platform, the Su-34 incorporates a side-by-side cockpit in a widened, armored nose section and is powered by two AL-31F-M1 turbofan engines with speeds up to Mach 1.8. It includes 12 hardpoints and is equipped with the Leninets B-004 radar, Khibiny-M internal ECM, L-150 RWR, electro-optical targeting system, and a rear-facing radar sensor for missile threat awareness. The 2019 variant marked operational use of UPAB-1500B and UPAB-500 guided glide bombs, enhancing its standoff precision strike capability. It can also deploy Kh-31, Kh-59, Kh-35, KAB-500/1500, R-73, and R-77 munitions. The aircraft features in-flight refueling capability and is optimized for low-level penetration and deep interdiction. Fullback is the NATO reporting name for the Su-34.

“Su” refers to Sukhoi, and “34” indicates the strike variant developed from the Su-27IB program. The 2019 configuration emphasized long-range standoff attack with the integration of UPAB munitions, enabling engagement of hardened or defended targets without entering contested airspace.

Type: Fighter-bomber / strike aircraft

FUNCTION: The Su-34 is used for long-range interdiction, tactical bombing, and precision standoff strikes. The introduction of UPAB bombs in 2019 enhanced its ability to strike fortified targets from outside enemy air defenses.
