OVERVIEW: The Su-30MKI Flanker H is a twin-engine, two-seat, 4.5 generation Supermaneuverable multirole fighter developed by Sukhoi and produced by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Indian Air Force. The 2022-standard configuration includes integration of Indian and Israeli air-to-air missiles and the supersonic BrahMos-A cruise missile for land and maritime strike.

DETAILS: The Su-30MKI is based on the Su-27UB airframe and incorporates AL-31FP thrust-vectoring engines and canards for high maneuverability. The 2022 version features the N011M Bars radar, IRST, digital RWR, electronic warfare systems, and helmet-mounted sight, and supports 12 hardpoints for diverse weapons. This variant is equipped to fire the indigenous Astra Mk1 active radar-guided missile, the Israeli I-Derby ER beyond-visual-range missile, and the BrahMos-A air-launched cruise missile, operationally deployed on modified aircraft from No. 222 Squadron. It also retains compatibility with legacy Russian weapons including R-73 and R-77, as well as Kh-29, Kh-31, and KAB-500 series munitions. By 2022, HAL had delivered over 270 aircraft, with continuing upgrades under Super Sukhoi proposals. Flanker-H is the NATO reporting name assigned to this variant of the Su-30 series.

“Su” stands for Sukhoi, “MK” means “Modernizirovannyi Kommercheskiy” (Modernized Commercial), and “I” refers to the India-specific version. The 2022-standard Su-30MKI features full operational integration of Indian-developed systems, including the Astra Mk1 BVRAAM and BrahMos-A cruise missile, requiring airframe strengthening and avionics modifications. Select aircraft were modified to support the 2.5-ton BrahMos-A, including reinforced pylons and specialized digital interfaces. This configuration reflects India’s move toward greater missile independence and long-range strike flexibility.

TYPE: Multirole air superiority fighter

FUNCTION: The Su-30MKI is employed for air superiority, strategic deterrence, and precision deep strike missions, with enhanced capabilities against aerial, land, and maritime targets. The 2022 version adds stand-off strike reach and indigenous missile compatibility, reinforcing India’s regional power projection.
