OVERVIEW: The Su-30MKI Mk2 Flanker H is a twin-engine, two-seat, 4.5 generation Supermaneuverable multirole fighter jointly produced by Sukhoi and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Indian Air Force. The 2022 Mk2 version introduced full operational integration of indigenous and foreign-origin air-to-air and air-to-surface precision weapons including Astra Mk1, I-Derby ER, and the BrahMos-A cruise missile.

DETAILS: The Su-30MKI Mk2 is derived from the Su-27UB airframe and features thrust-vectoring AL-31FP engines and canards for enhanced maneuverability and control. The 2022 variant retains the N011M Bars passive electronically scanned array radar and 12 external hardpoints, now certified to carry Astra Mk1 beyond-visual-range missiles, the Israeli I-Derby ER, and the BrahMos-A air-launched cruise missile with reinforced centerline pylons. Core systems include IRST, helmet-mounted sight, RWR, internal ECM, French Thales HUD, Sagem inertial navigation, and Israeli electronic warfare equipment. By 2022, at least two squadrons had received aircraft modified for BrahMos-A integration, while Astra Mk1 and I-Derby ER were entering frontline service as part of the IAF’s indigenous armament initiative. Flanker-H is the NATO reporting name assigned to this Su-30MKI variant.

“Su” stands for Sukhoi, “MK” for “Modernizirovannyi Kommercheskiy” (Modernized Commercial), “I” for India, and “Mk2” refers to the second major production standard. The 2022 configuration added full missile integration for Astra Mk1 and I-Derby ER, extended air combat reach, and deep-penetration strike capability with the 2.5-ton BrahMos-A, which required structural modifications and avionics adaptation on select units. These improvements marked the operational maturity of Indian-developed weapons within the Su-30MKI fleet.

TYPE: Multirole air superiority fighter

FUNCTION: The Su-30MKI Mk2 is used for multirole missions including long-range air superiority, precision strike, and maritime interdiction. The 2022 configuration enhances stand-off engagement capability and weapon autonomy through integration of domestically developed missiles and strategic cruise weapons.
