OVERVIEW: The Su-34NVO Fullback is a twin-engine, two-seat, 4.5 generation prototype strike fighter developed by Sukhoi for the Russian Air Force as part of the modernization program for the Su-34 family. Introduced in 2021, the Su-34NVO served as the test platform for the upgraded Su-34M standard, incorporating enhanced sensors and expanded strike capabilities.

DETAILS: Based on the Su-27IB-derived Su-34 airframe, the Su-34NVO retains the side-by-side armored cockpit, AL-31F-M1 engines (Mach 1.8 max speed), and 12 hardpoints. The prototype tested new mission equipment including advanced radar modes, improved EW and RWR systems, and compatibility with new external reconnaissance and targeting pods. It was evaluated with the UKR-RT (ELINT), UKR-OE (optical-electronic), and UKR-RL (radar reconnaissance) pod systems to expand its ISR role. The platform maintained full use of precision and guided munitions including KAB-series bombs, Kh-59MK, Kh-31, and R-77/R-73. Fullback is the NATO reporting name for the Su-34.

“Su” designates Sukhoi, and “34NVO” indicates the prototype for the Novy Vozmozhnosti ("New Capabilities") upgrade path toward the serial Su-34M. It validated the pod-based modular architecture that characterizes the Su-34M’s multirole enhancement, focusing on ISR and precision strike flexibility.

Type: Fighter-bomber / strike aircraft

FUNCTION: The Su-34NVO was used to test modular mission systems and multirole expansion for future Su-34M aircraft. Its role was evaluation and development of enhanced strike and reconnaissance capability through external systems integration.
